IRC Networks
There are a few different IRC networks that are available to use for on-line role play. A few of the more popular nets are:
- AustNet (us.austnet.org)
- CastleNet (irc.castlenet.org)
- DalNet (spider.dal.net port)
- DarkMyst (several IRC servers)
- DreamMyst (irc.dreammyst.net)
- EfNet (irc.blackened.com)
- MagicStar (rpg.magicstar.net)
- SorceryNet (kechara.sorcery.net)
- StarChat (polaris.starchat.net)
- UnderNet (us.undernet.org)
General Rules
There are basic rules that go for each channel. Ask a channel operator, and/or visit their web page to read about rules that might not be listed, or rules listed here that may not be applicable.
- No Power-gaming: Power-gaming, or what some people call auto hits or power plays are not tolerated in most IRC RP channels. Each group, or caste of RP types has their own views on what the definition of Power-gaming moves are. Basically it comes down to this: Don’t try and control another person’s character. If you make a hit on someone’s character it is his or her privilege and right as the typist to deny any reaction to your action. Be considerate.
- No Advertising: This rule applies to almost all channels on IRC. It is considered rude and inappropriate to advertise web pages, channels, other IRC networks, and such in another person’s channel. If you wish to invite someone to your channel send them a /notice
or a /MSG to tell them where to go. The only reason you should have to advertise your channel is if more than one person has agreed to go, and the rest of the channel is aware. Please check with the channel rules. - No Flooding: Flooding on IRC also applies to almost all channels, its not just a RP rule. Basically, don’t send text that fills the entire window& if you have a description of a character, try to keep it to 1 maybe 2 pop-ups. Otherwise, warn the channel that you will be sending a long description. Some channels have members who run flood protection. If your text fills the entire screen you will be kicked and/or banned from that channel.
- Language: Please be aware that members of the RP community come in many shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and an important thing to remember is age. If you prefer to RP in an adult environment do a /list on the network, to find channels either 18+ or 21+. It is suggested you refrain from using modern day profanity. As RP is meant for imagination usage, use it to come up with more creative insults in character.
- Agendas: Sometimes people have personal problems. Sometimes people have personal problems with other people on-line. Please remember to leave all personal problems at the door. Personal agenda’s are also asked to be dropped off. Don’t try to come to a channel and apply your rules. The freedom of IRC allows all users the chance to open and create their own channel. We encourage all to explore the possibilities.
- The Golden Rule: Treat others how you expect to be treated. Self explanatory, don’t be an arse! Use your senses and be intelligent. Narrow-mindedness will get you nowhere, so enjoy it, and contribute!
